The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature by William James,

The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature by William James,
James's masterful treatise on the psychology of individual religious experience was originally composed for the prestigious Gifford Lectures delivered at Edinburgh University in 1901-1902. Emphasizing subjective religious experience in its many guises, as opposed to the distinctions among specific creeds or theologies, this trenchant exploration of the religious imagination is still unsurpassed as an overview of the human belief in a transcendent reality, whether personalized as God or viewed impersonally as some higher spiritual reality. As such James's study is relevant to any religious context, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, "New Age, " or any other. James's gift for distilling the essential ingredients of the religious experience from the great mass of details is evident in every chapter. Taking the approach that extreme manifestations of the religious temperament give us more insight into the subject than the routine features of worship and ritual, he discusses many intriguing accounts of remarkable religious experiences, grouping these experiences into broad types: healthy-mindedness, the sick soul, the divided self and the process of its unification, conversion, saintliness, and mysticism. He also discusses the distinctions between religious experience and philosophy; psychological theories concerning the origin and nature of religious belief; and the overall value of religion to human well-being. James concludes that religious experience is real insofar as it produces real effects on peoples' lives and characters, and therefore it can and should be the subject of serious scientific inquiry.

Godliness: Translating God
Godliness: Translating God
What happens when we confront the stumbling blocks to faith head-on? In Godliness, Rabbi Harold Schulweis leads readers through his own journey, turning inward to examine religious tradition and reveal the sometimes repressed hidden treasure of belief. Beginning with a personal story of a ?curse? received when trying to comfort a mourner, it ends with a surprising blessing, a gift for all of us. Along the way, Rabbi Schulweis helps readers of all faiths, all backgrounds understand the relevance and power of faith in these modern times. By examining the concept of ?Godliness, ? he builds a common language that bridges the gap between the religious and secular, and between different denominations and religions. While coming from a very personal and essentially Jewish worldview, theology and belief system, he helps us see the depth of kinship that exists among us.

Religious humanism - Religious humanism, is an integration of religious rituals with humanistic philosophy that centers on human needs, interests, and abilities. The two basic approaches to religious humanism are from a humanist viewpoint that incorporates religious ritual, and from a revealed religious tradition with a humanist influence.

Religious persecution - Religious persecution is most often a variant of persecution, motivated by non-religious factors such as simple greed. Many religious leaders accumulate wealth and many "religious" persecutions stem from attempts by members of other faiths to redistribute that wealth to themselves.
